Today more than ever, foodstuffs, animal feed and consumer products travel thousands of kilometres from producers to processing facilities and from there on to consumers. Global supply chains and trade also pose risks, for instance if there are varying legal or hygienic conditions or if products are not transported appropriately. International harmonisation and expert collaboration are therefore required: both by the relevant authorities and by supranational and international organisations. This is an important prerequisite to be able to guarantee a high level of food safety worldwide.
The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) is well connected internationally and contributes its employees’ expertise in the fields of foodstuffs, animal feed, consumer products, pesticides, veterinary drugs, genetically modified organisms, measurement techniques and standardisation on numerous boards within the European Union and in international organisations further afield.
